Mary graduated from the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ with an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering in 2016.<\/p><\/div>\n

Making a career pivot can be daunting\u2014especially when you’re stepping into uncharted territory. For Mary Bucklin \u201916, shifting from academic research to a role in industry wasn\u2019t just about changing jobs. It was about discovering new strengths, building confidence, and finding a support system that could help guide her through an uncertain transition.<\/p>\n

Even after completing a PhD in biomedical engineering and working as a postdoctoral researcher, Mary was still figuring out her path. She had developed a passion for scientific writing\u2014drafting grant proposals, preparing award-winning conference presentations, and realizing how much she enjoyed translating complex research into impactful narratives. But like many professionals looking to pivot, she was unsure how to take the first step.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had the skills,\u201d Mary says. \u201cBut I didn\u2019t know how to apply them in a different setting, or even what roles might be a good fit. That\u2019s when I turned to the Career Resources<\/a> offered to Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ alumni\u2014and it changed everything.\u201d<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”15px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

From uncertainty to action<\/h3>\n

A single email to the University unlocked a flood of opportunity. Mary was introduced to The Meliora Collective\u2019s<\/a> Mentorship Program, one-on-one career coaching<\/a>, and a calendar of virtual events<\/a> designed to empower alumni at any career stage. She jumped in with both feet.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking with a career coach and participating in mentoring gave me clarity,\u201d Mary explains. \u201cThey helped me update my resume, refine my networking approach, and develop the confidence I needed to move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mary also discovered how to use LinkedIn as a strategic tool. After attending a virtual workshop on personal branding and outreach, she began connecting with professionals in medical writing\u2014a field she hadn\u2019t previously considered. That single tactic sparked more than 50 conversations, opened doors to job interviews, and even led to direct referrals.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”15px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_column_text]\"Mary<\/p>\n

Community that lifts you up<\/h3>\n

For Mary, one of the most powerful takeaways has been the feeling of support and belonging.<\/p>\n

\u201cGetting a job is often about who you know,\u201d she says. \u201cThe Rochester community has been that network for me. From coaches to mentors to fellow alumni, I\u2019ve had people cheering me on and guiding me at every step.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mentor offered firsthand insight into careers in industry and helped Mary understand the value of her academic background in new contexts. Meanwhile, her career coach encouraged her to reflect on what she really wanted and what she was capable of.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was about more than resumes or interviews,\u201d Mary says. \u201cIt was about realizing that I had options, and I wasn\u2019t alone in figuring them out.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”15px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a whole community ready to help.<\/span><\/h3><\/blockquote>[vc_column_text]Now actively pursuing roles in medical writing, Mary feels energized by the possibilities ahead. And she\u2019s passionate about helping other alumni see what\u2019s possible, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy advice? Just send the email,\u201d she says. \u201cExplain where you are in your career and what you\u2019re looking for. That\u2019s exactly how I started, and I was blown away by the response.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mary\u2019s story is a reminder that you don\u2019t need to have all the answers to begin. What matters is taking that first step\u2014and being open to what comes next.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so grateful for the guidance I received,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s made me more confident, more connected, and more excited about the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

**After this story was posted, Mary started a new position at Orthofix as a medical writer.
