A student shines: Alan Jimenez ’25, Recipient of the Steven and Randi Piaker Family Endowed Scholarship<\/h1>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/5″][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height=”150px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”grid” text_align=”left” css_animation=”” box_shadow_on_row=”no”][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”25px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_column_text]The Piaker Family Scholarship was established as part of the Nataraj Challenge, which began during the University\u2019s Together for Rochester campaign. In just one year, the Nataraj Challenge raised $2.6 million and created 22 new, endowed scholarships\u2014including this one\u2014in support of the University\u02bcs equity, diversity, and inclusion goals.<\/p>\n

\"Alan<\/p>\n

Growing up about an hour north of Chicago in a small town called Round Lake, Alan Jimenez \u201925 aspired to go to college, especially after an eighth grade field trip to a local campus. Watching the students there allowed him to imagine himself as a college student someday.<\/p>\n

Jimenez\u2019s parents\u2014Mexican immigrants\u2014wanted him to go to college, too. Getting a scholarship helped make it possible for him to attend the URochester, Jimenez\u2019s top choice. \u201cMy parents always emphasized academics,\u201d he says. \u201cTo this day, they continue to motivate me\u2014my mom even sends me daily motivation texts.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his senior year of high school, Jimenez learned about the University from his school counselor. \u201cI was really intrigued by the Rochester Curriculum and that I could dive deeply into my major and still have room in my schedule to explore other interests,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n

Jimenez\u2019s first class in computer science is both challenging and inspiring. He and a classmate are creating a Super Mario-like video game for their capstone project this semester\u2014an effort that Jimenez describes as both \u201cfun and hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

Besides delving into computer programming, Jimenez is already exploring new interests both in and outside the classroom. His love of music prompted him to sign up for a music class. He\u2019s learning about treble and bass and what kinds of chords complement various melodies. He loves it so much he\u2019s considering trying an instrument for the first time. While fluent in English and Spanish, he\u2019s also hoping to learn another language during these four years.<\/p>\n

When he\u2019s not in class, Jimenez can typically be found studying in the Gleason Library or Carlson Library or exercising in the gym. He\u2019s been a part of soccer and volleyball intramurals, and he enjoys pickup dodgeball games on Saturday nights.<\/p>\n

Recently, Jimenez met his scholarship donors, the Piakers, via Zoom. \u201cWe talked about how the campus has changed, their advice for getting through final exams, and sights to see in New York City, as I\u2019m planning a trip with some of my new college friends soon. It\u2019s amazing to me that they gave me a scholarship. They didn\u2019t even know me, yet they believed in me and wanted to support me. I can\u2019t thank them enough.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”25px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”grid” text_align=”left” css_animation=”” box_shadow_on_row=”no”][vc_column][vc_row_inner row_type=”row” type=”grid” use_row_as_full_screen_section_slide=”no” text_align=”left” background_color=”#e9e5d7″ css_animation=”” box_shadow_on_row=”no”][vc_column_inner width=”1\/4″][vc_empty_space height=”25px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”47552″ img_size=”150×171″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” mkd_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”25px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”3\/4″][vc_empty_space height=”10px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_column_text]\u201cMy experience at the University was truly life-changing; it made me stretch academically and, at the same time, offered a nurturing environment that promoted personal growth and resulted in lifelong friendships. My wife, Randi, and I consider it a privilege to give back and help qualified young adults fulfill their dream of attending the URochester.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Courtney and I established this scholarship challenge hopeful that others would step up, and we are glad that so many have joined us. It is so clear to us that when a collective community comes together, we can better help our most talented and diverse students pursue their aspirations and to do so free of undue financial hardship.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
