Alumni like Josh Richards \u201912, \u201914S (MS), the business planning and analysis director for North America at Sandoz Pharmaceuticals, are helping to lead the way by offering internships. For Richards, it\u2019s all about paying it forward.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, the year before he graduated, Richards learned about an internship opportunity at Sandoz, a division of Novartis. \u201cI discovered that Sandoz\u2019s CEO and president at the time\u2014Don DeGolyer\u2014was a Rochester alumnus and former college athlete,\u201d says Richards, who was on the soccer team for four years. \u201cBecause we had something in common, I felt comfortable reaching out to him directly. We ended up connecting a number of times over email, which helped me secure the internship that eventually turned into a full-time job.\u201d Richards has been with Sandoz for 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>During the past few years, Richards has worked closely with Sandoz\u2019s Human Resources department on its internship program\u2014and he lobbies for Rochester undergraduate and MBA-level interns whenever possible. This year, Sandoz and Simon Business School&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/simon.rochester.edu\/admitted-portal\/full-time-mba\/student-services\/cmc-welcome\/index.aspx\">Jay S. and Jeanne Benet Career Management Center<\/a> formalized their internship partnership program, something Richards helped coordinate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternships are very competitive, here at Sandoz and elsewhere, especially at the MBA level,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s why it is so important for students at all levels to be bold and brash, build and use their networks, and just go for it. This kind of approach will help set them apart and get them in the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 100 undergraduate and graduate students applied for five internship spots within Sandoz\u2019s finance department this summer, including 30 from Rochester. \u201cWe extended offers to two rising juniors from Rochester and they both accepted,\u201d adds Richards. \u201cAnd, one of our incoming MBA interns is from Simon.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;grid&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; box_shadow_on_row=&#8221;no&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29622\" style=\"width: 226px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29622\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29622\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/adv\/alumni-news-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Nandi-1-216x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/adv\/alumni-news-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Nandi-1-216x300.jpeg 216w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/adv\/alumni-news-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Nandi-1.jpeg 452w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29622\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nandini Joshi \u201922<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nandini Joshi \u201922, an international student with a double major of financial economics and business, is one of the undergraduate interns. She met Richards last summer via Zoom after posting her resume to Handshake, a job networking platform offered through the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/careercenter\/\">Greene Center for Career Education &amp; Connections<\/a>. Richards was intrigued by Joshi\u2019s resume, reached out to her, and then told her about the internships at his company. She was struck with how interested he was in helping her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting internships is especially difficult right now so I am very grateful to Josh for helping me,\u201d says Joshi. \u201cI\u2019m excited that I\u2019ll get to work in corporate finance soon where I can hone, build, and demonstrate my skills in forecasting, budgeting, and presenting\u2014it\u2019s a great opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sandoz\u2019s internships are paid which makes them all the more competitive. \u201cInternships give undergraduates great, real world experience,\u201d Richards says. \u201cThe more we teach them, the more they get from the opportunity, and the more likely they will want to come back here next summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richards adds Sandoz expects a lot from its interns. \u201cI\u2019m a firm believer in throwing them into the fire and seeing what they can do,\u201d he says, noting that Bryan Kim &#8217;20, an undergraduate intern from two years ago was given an opportunity to present to the company\u2019s chief financial officer in the first few weeks of his assignment. \u201cBryan did great and, after he graduated, he became a contractor with us. Right now, he\u2019s interviewing for a full-time position here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat internship was the starting point of my career,\u201d says Kim. \u201cNot only was I able to learn a lot about a complex industry like pharmaceuticals, but it also solidified my interest in finance. I was gaining real life experience in projects that had significant impact while also developing my technical and analytical skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richards says that alumni\u2014in whatever fields they are in\u2014are in a position to really help students, especially this year. \u201cI feel it\u2019s my responsibility to give back and help the next generation gain the experiences that will help them on their career paths,\u201d he says. \u201cWe all can do something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Together for Rochester campaign is an opportunity to reinforce what we know is critical for today\u2019s Rochester students\u2014gaining experience to explore different career paths and apply what they learn here,\u201d says Joe Testani, assistant dean and executive director of the Greene Center. \u201cThese valuable opportunities can lead to stronger networks, future job prospects, and an increased understanding of work and a students\u2019 skill set. We hope we continue to have more alumni like Josh help current and future generations of students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven during the pandemic last summer, 100 percent of Simon\u2019s MBA Class of 2021 had a corporate internship or pursued project work with tech start-ups or new ventures,\u201d says Angela Petrucco, \u201901W (MS), assistant dean of the Benet Center. \u201cSimon alumni like Josh and many others helped make these opportunities possible.
