Her thriving, eight-year-old business came to a sudden halt a few weeks ago. \u201cIt all stopped, literally overnight,\u201d she says. \u201cEvery time I checked my phone, there was a cancelation. Within what seemed like hours, we went from being a busy catering and event business to only being able to offer a take-out option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-14572\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/adv\/alumni-news-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/k3-253x300.jpg\" alt=\"lined up bowls of prepared foods (salads with chicken)\" width=\"450\" height=\"535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/adv\/alumni-news-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/k3-253x300.jpg 253w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/adv\/alumni-news-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/k3-700x832.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/adv\/alumni-news-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/k3-600x713.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/adv\/alumni-news-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/k3.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/>It\u2019s a fall-out of the pandemic. Small business owners like Klock are now struggling, but a curbside pickup option helps her keep her business afloat, pay her small staff, and, now, help the community.<\/p>\n<p>When Klock started offering curbside pickup, her loyal customers lined up, eager to get the healthy, delicious food her business is known to make. They also started tipping her staff, and doing so quite generously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir generosity got me thinking,\u201d Klock adds. \u201cI wondered if people would want to help us get meals to our community\u2019s frontline health care workers and local charities who are really helping out during this unprecedented turmoil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, Klock added <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rootcatering.com\/takeout\">an option on her website<\/a> for people to donate toward meals for those who are going the extra mile right now. Instead of leaving gratuities online, customers can now click an option to make a donation in an amount of their choice.<\/p>\n<p>Klock\u2019s gut was right\u2014people have stepped up, and in a big way. Last week, her team delivered 70 meals to places like the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½\u2019s Ronald McDonald House and Strong Memorial Hospital. Plans are in the works to prepare and deliver more than 200 meals this week to even more places, including Foodlink and some 911 call centers.<\/p>\n<p>For Rochester\u2019s healthcare workers and charities, Klock\u2019s team is mostly serving up Root Catering\u2019s signature grain bowls, which are filled with healthy options such as roasted chicken, brown rice, carrots, cabbage, and cilantro. \u201cThese bowls taste good either hot or cold,\u201d she says. \u201cThey are perfect for busy people who don\u2019t know when they will get a moment to eat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing this is a win-win for everyone,\u201d Klock adds.\u00a0 \u201cWe have a certified kitchen, the staff, and the expertise and infrastructure\u2014we even have a delivery truck.
