After months of planning and expectation we are just a few days away from Monday’s total solar eclipse, which is both a rare astronomical event and a special occasion that brings our community together, sparking curiosity and wonder in all who witness it.

The hard work and dedication many of you have shown in preparing for this day have not gone unnoticed. Your efforts and partnership with other University organizations have been paramount in creating an enriching and secure experience for our entire University community. It’s a testament to what we can achieve when we come together with a common purpose.

Thank you for everything you do, not just today, but every day. I hope you are able to take a few moments on Monday to enjoy this extraordinary celestial event, knowing that it’s made all the more special because of the hard work and spirit of collaboration that defines our University.

As we head into the summer months, I want to take a moment to thank you. It was clear to me and many others who attended commencement that your attention to detail, effective coordination, and efficient resource management ensured that everything ran smoothly from start to finish! It’s also exciting to hear that during the next couple of weeks our division will receive a number of awards.

On May 30, the Medical Center Flood Response Team, will be honored with the Team Excellence Award from the URMC Quality Institute. A&F staff who worked on the flood response team:

1. EH&S: Michael Liberty, Carolyn Place, Mark Militello and Justin Carlson
2. Facilities: Mark Schwartz, David Featherman, Matthew Faulks, Richard Bassney and Willie Bullard
3. DPS: Michael Epping

On June 7, Michael Chudyk will receive the President’s Spotlight Award, which recognizes an individual who has spontaneously gone above and beyond in an exceptional act of kindness or service to our University. In April, Michael, who works as a groundskeeper for Facilities, jumped into the frigid Genesee River to rescue a man struggling in the water. He was aided by teammates Larry Steele, DeJuan Carroll and Noah Paterson from Facilities as well as Department of Public Safety Officer Louis DiPrima.

These achievements and many others (budget work, audit reviews, financial statement prep and audits, S&P overview, car theft investigations, contributions to the HCM project – to name just a few) are the fabric of what our division delivers every day and make a profound difference in the success of our University as a whole. When the 2030 Strategic Plan is launched later this year, it will inform how the University makes decisions; allocates resources; develops the roadmap for expansion and innovation; prioritizes, coordinates, and collaborates.

In preparation, members of the University’s Strategic Plan Work Group are holding discussion forums about the plan’s goals and objectives. There are sessions (in person and virtual) scheduled every week for at least the next six weeks, and no registration is required. I encourage everyone in Administration and Finance to consider attending a session. Check with your supervisor if you have questions or work out a plan with your team to have someone attend, ask questions, and take notes to share.

This is a transformative time for the URochester, and we all have a role to play! At Administration and Finance, the financial strategies we put in place and the careful oversight of infrastructure and core operations that we provide directly affect our University’s capacity to explore boundless possibilities in education, research, patient care and community involvement. A&F truly fuels the University’s mission!

We recently created this Administration and Finance email distribution list because communicating across the organization is important to me. I plan on providing periodic updates like this throughout the year. Working together we can help achieve this new vision for the University!
