Scott Flaherty, Director of Student Accounts & University BursarThe Ģý has named Scott Flaherty to the position of Director of Student Accounts & University Bursar, effective August 1. Flaherty, who has served as a senior financial analyst in the Bursar’s Office since July 2020, brings over 30 years of higher education administrative experience to his new role.

The appointment comes at a time when technology is rapidly transforming the responsibilities of university student financial offices, said University Controller Caroline Burnicki.

“As our systems continue to evolve, so does the role of the University Bursar,” she said. “As universities nationwide adapt to evolving financial landscapes and increasing demands for technological integration in student account services, I’m confident Scott’s expertise will help strengthen the University’s financial operations in the coming years.”

Flaherty served as the student financials project expert for the University’s implementation of UR Student (Workday). Prior to joining the University, he worked as senior director of Student Financial Services at SUNY Polytechnic Institute. His experience also includes consulting roles with Attain LLC and Evans Consulting Group, as well as a position as Associate Bursar at St. John Fisher College.

Flaherty holds a bachelor’s degree in English from SUNY Geneseo.

To better serve the University community and increase flexibility among meal plan options, Rochester Dining has made several improvements to the 2024 -25 meal plan program. “Declining Dollars” has been renamed to “Dining Dollars,” and the campus currency formerly known as “URos” —now called “Rocky Bucks”—is accepted by a wider range of vendors.

“These changes are designed to give students more control over how they spend their money and reduce confusion about their payment options,” says Anne-Marie Algier, interim dean of students. “Whereas Dining Dollars can only be spent at campus dining facilities and on convenience food items, Rocky Bucks are accepted by a larger network of dining, food, and retail options on campus and in College Town.”

Both Dining Dollars and Rocky Bucks can be used at campus-based dining facilities and coffee shops, including:

  • All campus and ESM Dining Halls: Danforth, Douglass, The Pit, ESM
  • Convenience: Hillside Market, Common Market, Grab & Go, California Rollin
  • Coffee: Starbucks, Connections, Peets, The Brew
  • Medical Center: Café 601, Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters

In addition, Rocky Bucks can be used for purchases at the following:

  • Campus Mail Center for shipping and postal needs
  • Printing and Copying services
  • Vending machines
  • Tickets for events
  • Barnes & Noble Bookstore at College Town and Eastman School of Music

Mike Zanghi, director of real estate and College Town, says that the University is working to expand the Rocky Bucks network and expects a number of new retailers to sign on over the spring and summer. The Ģý purchased College Town in 2023.

“We’re working closely with our College Town partners to develop incentives that will benefit both shoppers and retailers—such as special discounts and co-promotions for faculty, students, and staff using Rocky Bucks,” says Zanghi. “We’re excited to add Joy Mart among the first to join our expanding Rocky Bucks network.”

How to purchase Rocky Bucks:

  • Students in apartment-style units with a kitchen can enroll in a new 2024-25 meal plan option that includes both Dining Dollars and Rocky Bucks. The deadline to enroll in a University is April 28, 2024.
  • Faculty, staff, and students can purchase Rocky Bucks at any time through the individual’s Transact account (). University employees who do not have a Transact account can sign up using the following link: . Parents can replenish Rocky Bucks through their child’s Transact account—all students are automatically assigned a Transact account as incoming first-year students.
  • Visitors can purchase Rocky Bucks by attaining a Visitor Card from the Transact kiosk outside Danforth dining center in Susan B. Anthony Hall. Additional kiosks will be installed in the coming months.

Ģý greatly expands AED/CPR cabinet locations, training, and awareness /administration-finance/university-of-rochester-greatly-expands-aed-cabinet-locations/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 13:43:37 +0000 /administration-finance/?p=6462 User–friendly equipment makes it easier to provide lifesaving aid for cardiac arrest with visual instructions, real-time CPR monitoring, and voice prompts. Userfriendly equipment makes it easier to provide lifesaving aid for cardiac arrest with visual instructions, real-time CPR monitoring, and voice prompts.

After commissioning an institution-wide review, the Ģý has upgraded and expanded the number of Automated External Defibrillator (AED) cabinets across the University’s campuses to make the lifesaving equipment easier to find and to use. The highly recognizable red-and-white cabinets are located in high-traffic areas such as public buildings and residence halls, using a two-minute response time as a best practice for accessing an AED in a time of need.

All existing AED cabinets were upgraded with a Zoll AED 3 device featuring touchscreen displays with step-by-step instructions, as well as Real CPR Help technology. When properly deployed, the device will monitor the depth and speed of chest compressions and provide voice alerts such as “Push Harder.” The machine will also alert the user if a shock (defibrillation) is needed. When not in use, the equipment is monitored through an online dashboard that tracks device location, maintenance, and readiness. Additional cabinets also were installed, upping the University’s total cabinet count to more than 150 locations.

The University is now raising awareness of the availability, location, and correct way to operate life-saving CPR/AED equipment throughout the month of February.

“As American Heart Month kicks off, it’s a great time to bring attention to the upgrade and how important this program is to the entire University community,” said Mike Liberty, associate vice president of Environmental Health & Safety. “The new AED devices are easy to find and easy to use, so all of us can feel confident if ever faced with helping out during a heart emergency.”

As part of the upgrade, the University is working with first aid and safety professionals from Cintas to train small groups of frontline staff on the new equipment in early February. For the wider University community, Cintas will be hosting an on Thursday, February 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second floor of Wilson Commons in Hirst Lounge.

These sessions complement American Heart Association “HeartSaver” CPR AED training sessions offered to the wider campus community through the UR Medical Center and Human Resources.

Everyone can be a good bystander and help save a life by learning to locate and use life-saving equipment to assist those experiencing a cardiac emergency until professional help arrives:

  • Before an emergency occurs: Prepare.
    • Familiarize yourself with AED cabinet locations on campus. View this list to find locations in areas you visit most often (e.g., classrooms, residence halls, study areas, and eateries). Keep an eye out for the red-and-white cabinet markers and make a mental note for future reference.
    • Sign up for an American Heart Association “HeartSaver” CPR AED training or other life-saving interventions.
    • Stop by the interactive display in Hirst Lounge, Wilson Commons, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 15 to and practice on the Flatman simulator.
  • During an emergency: Act.
    • Call 911, or University Public Safety at (585) 275-3333 or by picking up a Blue Light Emergency Phone
    • Look for a red-and-white AED cabinet in the nearest likely location, e.g., near entryways, elevators, and restrooms in residence halls, schools, and public spaces. AED cabinets are placed in high-traffic areas throughout the University using a 2-minute response time as a best practice. If you have trouble finding a cabinet, refer to the list of AED locations.
    • Follow the instructions in the kit while waiting for help to arrive.

The Office of Environmental Health & Safety worked with first aid and safety professionals at Cintas to establish University guidelines for cabinet locations based on current best practices and conducted an institution-wide review, assessment and upgrade across the University’s campuses. For questions about AED standards and locations in your area, please contact Tom Saunders, emergency preparedness manager of Environmental Health & Safety, at (585) 353-4700 or tsaunde2@safety.rochester.edu.
