A total of $275,000 in grants will go to support twenty translators in their projects to translate fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry. Since 1981, the <span class=\"caps\">NEA<\/span> has awarded 410 fellowships to 363 translators, with translations representing 66 languages and 77 countries.<\/p>\n<p>From the <span class=\"caps\">NEA<\/span> website:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe <span class=\"caps\">NEA<\/span> is committed to providing Americans with diverse art experiences,\u201d said <span class=\"caps\">NEA<\/span> Chairman Jane Chu. \u201cOur support of literary translation provides opportunities for readers to expand their knowledge of other cultures and traditions while also experiencing some of the world\u2019s most talented writers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Four of this year&#8217;s twenty recipients are tied ever-so-closely to Open Letter Books. In alphabetical order, and with a mere fraction of the skills and attributes they all boast, they are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jennifer Grotz, director of the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/translation\/graduate\/malts.html\">MA in Literary Translation Studies program<\/a>, Open Letter poetry editor, and translator from Polish and French. Her translation of French author Hubert Haddad&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openletterbooks.org\/collections\/hubert-haddad\"><em>Rochester Knockings<\/em><\/a> is forthcoming this October.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>K. E. Semmel, St. Louis Cardinals fan, and translator from Danish. His translation of Naja Marie Aidt&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openletterbooks.org\/collections\/naja-marie-aidt\/products\/rock-paper-scissors\"><em>Rock, Paper, Scissors<\/em><\/a> comes out next week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Benjamin Paloff, translator from Polish and Czech. His translation of Andrzej Sosnowski&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openletterbooks.org\/collections\/andrzej-sosnowski\/products\/lodgings\"><em>Lodgings<\/em><\/a> came out in 2011.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Will Vanderhyden, Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ <span class=\"caps\">MALTS<\/span> graduate, and translator from Spanish.
