A month or so after the longlists were announced,<\/a> PEN<\/span> has announced the finalists<\/a> for all of their literary prizes, including two translation-specific ones. <\/p>\n

*<\/center><\/p>\n

First up is the PEN<\/span> Award for Poetry in Translation,<\/a> which has a killer shortlist:<\/p>\n

Sorrowtoothpaste Mirrorcream<\/em><\/a> by Kim Hyesoon, translated from the Korean by Don Mee Choi (Action Books)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I Am the Beggar of the World: Landays from Contemporary Afghanistan<\/em>,<\/a> edited and translated from the Pashto by Eliza Griswold (Farrar, Straus and Giroux)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

Sor Juana In\u00e9s de la Cruz<\/em><\/a> by Juana In\u00e9s de la Cruz, translated from the Spanish by Edith Grossman (W. W. Norton & Company)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

Breathturn into Timestead<\/em><\/a> by Paul Celan, translated from the German by Pierre Joris (Farrar, Straus and Giroux)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

Guantanamo<\/em><\/a> by Frank Smith, translated from the French by Vanessa Place
\n (Les Figues Press)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Interestingly, three of these titles—I Am the Beggar of the World, Sorrowtoothpaste Mirrorcream,<\/i> and Guantanamo<\/i>—are on the Best Translated Book Award Poetry Longlist<\/a> as well. <\/p>\n

I want Sorrowtoothpaste Mirrorcream<\/em> and Don Mee Choi and Kim Hyesoon to win every literary prize possible, so I’m pulling for that. Although, there is a lot of stiff competition . . .<\/p>\n

In the PEN<\/span> Translation Prize,<\/a> young presses—especially Two Lines—rule the shortlist:<\/p>\n

The Gray Notebook<\/em><\/a> by Josep Pla, translated from the Catalan by Peter Bush (New York Review Books)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Symmetry Teacher<\/em><\/a> by Andrei Bitov, translated from the Russian by Polly Gannon (Farrar, Straus and Giroux)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Baboon<\/em><\/a> by Naja Marie Aidt, translated from the Danish by Denise Newman (Two Lines Press)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Texas: The Great Theft<\/em><\/a> by Carmen Boullosa, translated from the Spanish by Samantha Schnee (Deep Vellum Publishing)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Self-Portrait in Green<\/em><\/a> by Marie NDiaye, translated from the French by Jordan Stump (Two Lines Press)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

First of all, thank the judging gods (or just the judges themselves) that the I Ching<\/em> didn’t make the list of finalists. (Not much of a fan of The Man Who Loved Dogs<\/em> either to be honest.) I really like the mix that’s on this list—in part because these are all books I’ve read or plan on reading when I have time again. <\/p>\n

Baboon<\/em> is the only<\/em> book on this list that made the BTBA<\/span> Fiction Longlist,<\/a> which is curious, but a good sign about the diversity of these sorts of awards.<\/p>\n

I’m torn between rooting for Bromance Will and Texas<\/em> and Naja, but since we’re doing Naja’s novel in the fall —”Rock, Paper, Scissors<\/i>“:http:\/\/www.openletterbooks.org\/products\/rock-paper-scissors — I’m rooting for Baboon.<\/em> Go Denmark! <\/p>\n
