  {"id":300216,"date":"2015-01-22T17:15:44","date_gmt":"2015-01-22T17:15:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2015\/01\/22\/three-percent-89-dont-laugh-so-loud\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T14:45:02","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T14:45:02","slug":"three-percent-89-dont-laugh-so-loud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2015\/01\/22\/three-percent-89-dont-laugh-so-loud\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Percent #89: Don&#39;t Laugh So Loud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week&#8217;s podcast is all about Denis Johnson&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/thelaughingmonsters\/denisjohnson\"><em>The Laughing Monsters<\/em>,<\/a> which came out last year and is &#8220;a high-suspense tale of kaleidoscoping loyalties in the post-9\/11 world that shows one of our great novelists at the top of his game.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Writer, critic, and Johnson fan Patrick Smith (here&#8217;s a recent review of his in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.3ammagazine.com\/3am\/balzacs-physiology-of-the-employee\/\">3:AM<\/a> and one about <em>Liminov<\/em> in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicandliterature.org\/reviews\/2014\/12\/2\/emmanuel-carreres-limonov\"><em>Music &amp; Literature<\/em><\/a>)  joined us for this book club discussion, which goes off in a few different directions&#8212;how everyone&#8217;s untrustworthy and willing to sell each other out, how Johnson got all this detail about Africa, etc.&#8212;with the general consensus that this is a pretty great book and one that fans of Graham Greene and\/or spy novels and\/or well-crafted fiction in general would like. <\/p>\n<p>(For another analysis\/conversation of the book, I highly recommend <a href=\"http:\/\/apologymagazine.com\/spiritual-spies\/\">this discussion<\/a> between Paul Maliszewski and Jesse Pearson.) <\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll update you in the future when we have a specific date set, but the next book we&#8217;ll be discussing in this &#8220;book club&#8221; format is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feministpress.org\/books\/virginie-despentes\/apocalypse-baby\"><em>Apocalypse Baby<\/em><\/a> by Virginie Despentes, translated from the French by Sian Reynolds and available from Feminist Press. (Then I think we&#8217;ll be doing Ann Morgan&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/books.wwnorton.com\/books\/detail.aspx?ID=4294987114\"><em>The World Between Two Covers<\/em>,<\/a> and may even have her on that podcast.)<\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s music&#8212;and I apologize for bludgeoning your ears with this, but it will make sense by the end&#8212;is Fall Out Boy&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/LBr7kECsjcQ\">Centuries.<\/a> (I literally cringed writing that sentence.
