Every bracket matchup is decided by a blogger\/writer\/critic\/minor celebrity who picks between the two books on merit, readability, cover design, weight, other intangibles&#8212;whatever they want.<\/p>\n<p>As a sucker for a) brackets and b) contests, I usually pay some attention to this every year. Or, I used to. Over the past few years, the &#8220;Sweet 16&#8221; titles have been overwhelmingly <em>American.<\/em> Which is fine, obviously, there are great American writers out there, but, well, at the same time, it just seems a bit provincial and lame.<\/p>\n<p>SO. For this year&#8217;s Tournament&#8212;the 10th!&#8212;I&#8217;d like to see a few international works make it. More specifically I would give anything<sup id=\"fnrev35866605852951035ca27f\" class=\"footnote\"><a href=\"#fn35866605852951035ca27f\">1<\/a><\/sup> to get an Open Letter book into the competition. <\/p>\n<p>Until December 2nd, <em>The Morning News<\/em> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themorningnews.org\/post\/the-morning-news-tournament-of-books-x\">accepting write-ins<\/a> for the Long List of Potential Books via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s\/FT7CX7P\">this Survey Monkey form.<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>If you click there and enter in one of the eligible Open Letter titles listed below, and then email me at chad.post [at] rochester [dot] edu, I&#8217;ll give you a special gift code to use on our new website.<sup id=\"fnrev64874257452951035caae9\" class=\"footnote\"><a href=\"#fn64874257452951035caae9\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Here are the titles that are eligible for this year&#8217;s Tournament of Books:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Tirza<\/em> by Arnon Grunberg, translated from the Dutch by Sam Garrett (Personally, I think this one might have the best chance of making it.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>L&#8217;amour<\/em> by Marguerite Duras, translated from the French by Kazim Ali and Libby Murphy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The Dark<\/em> by Sergio Chejfec, translated from the Spanish by Heather Cleary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>18% Gray<\/em> by Zachary Karabashliev, translated from the Bulgarian by Angela Rodel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Everything Happens as It Does<\/em> by Albena Stambolova, translated from the Bulgarian by Olga Nikolova<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>A Short Tale of Shame<\/em> by Angel Igov, translated from the Bulgarian by Angela Rodel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>High Tide<\/em> by Inga \u0100bele, translated from the Latvian by Kaija Straumanis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Two or Three Years Later<\/em> by Ror Wolf, translated from the German by Jennifer Marquart<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Just choose your favorite, write it in, and email me at chad.post [at] rochester [dot] edu and I&#8217;ll give you some thanks. <\/p>\n<p id=\"fn35866605852951035ca27f\" class=\"footnote\"><sup>1<\/sup> That &#8220;anything&#8221; is capped at a $5 gift certificate to Open Letter&#8217;s website.
