PEN<\/span> just announced the shortlists for a ton of their annual awards, including the PEN<\/span> Award for Poetry in Translation and the PEN<\/span> Translation Prize, which, for obvious reasons, are the ones that I’m most interested in. <\/p>\n

First off, here’s the poetry shortlist,<\/a> which is the one featuring an Open Letter title:<\/p>\n

Tales of a Severed Head<\/em> by Rachida Madani (Yale University Press), Marilyn Hacker<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Smoke of Distant Fires<\/em> by Eduardo Chirinos (Open Letter Books), G. J. Racz<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Almost 1 Book\/Almost 1 Life<\/em> by Elfriede Czurda (Burning Deck), Rosmarie Waldrop<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Shock of the Lenders and Other Poems<\/em> by Jorge Santiago Perednik (Action Books), Molly Weigel<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Don Mee Choi is the judge for this award, and to digress for a second, I want to recommend her translation of Kim Hyesoon’s book of poetry, All the Garbage of the World, Unite!<\/em> As I mentioned on here before (and in our podcast), I recently judged a South Korean literature contest and this was one of the absolute best books that was included. She’s a fantastic translator and All the Garbage of the World, Unite!<\/em> is a really interesting, strange collection. (And has a fun title.)<\/p>\n

Moving onto the PEN<\/span> Translation Prize,<\/a> here are the finalists:<\/p>\n

A Long Day\u2019s Evening by Bilge Karasu<\/em> (City Lights Books), Aron Aji and Fred Stark<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Near to the Wild Heart<\/em> by Clarice Lispector (New Directions), Alison Entrekin<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Down the Rabbit Hole<\/em> by Juan Pablo Villalobos (Farrar, Straus and Giroux), Rosalind Harvey<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

The Cardboard House<\/em> by Mart\u00edn Ad\u00e1n (New Directions), Katherine Silver<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

The Island of Second Sight<\/em> by Albert Vigoleis Thelen (Galileo Publishers), Donald O. White<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Really solid list, although Maidenhair<\/em> deserves to be on there . . . and no Satantango<\/em>? Anyway . . . Judging this award are Margaret Carson, Bill Johnston, and Alex Zucker. <\/p>\n
