Stop, <br \/>\nI think you misheard that. I think <br \/>\nit’s an Eastern European high pressure <br \/>\narea working on my nerves with signs <br \/>\nof sun beneath the still-closed <br \/>\nsluice of day, as the machinery <br \/>\ntrembles before the grand opening <br \/>\nand the sun maneuvers toward the gates <br \/>\nalready ready to enter, soar up, sail out <br \/>\nover the city with the dazzling pomp <br \/>\nof a heat wave. The rooks that spend <br \/>\nthe night in the poplars in front of the house <br \/>\nhave already flown to the fields, <br \/>\nbut in sleep their dark racket was so very <br \/>\ntalkative that I imagine it might be <br \/>\npossible to chat with birds <br \/>\nat some wild frequency, <br \/>\nhead over heels, at daybreak, <br \/>\nbecause they run the same missions <br \/>\nat night as in the morning, so to hell <br \/>\nwith the goggles and flight suit, let’s <br \/>\nfile classified reports on the position <br \/>\nof enemies and friends on the Ocean <br \/>\nof Storms and the Sea of Vapors, the Sea <br \/>\nof Dreams and Crises, on the Sea <br \/>\nof Tranquility. How did the moon <br \/>\nget in here? And enemies? Let’s talk about <br \/>\nyou instead: so what if you’re lousy <br \/>\non the jump? You glide right off <br \/>\nthe edge, where there is no end, <br \/>\nand it’s a long way down? Now <br \/>\nleapfrog: surely that umbrella <br \/>\nis a parachute? Sometimes <br \/>\nI’m afraid of this mumbling, <br \/>\nthese words with missed connections, <br \/>\nfrom nowhere to nowhere, as if <br \/>\nmy head shone ominously with lights <br \/>\nfrom a pinball machine, but under <br \/>\nwhose control? Yours, or his there? <br \/>\nAnd do you remember Kloss? Ingolf <br \/>\nMork! The inrun, take-off, flight <br \/>\nand landing: I go to the bathroom, <br \/>\ncold water, shower, splashes <br \/>\nof water like snow from under skis <br \/>\nand the head blown off the pint <br \/>\ninto the faces of gawkers. I’d like <br \/>\nto jump that well, too. But something <br \/>\ndoesn’t want to pass my throat <br \/>\nafter the landing: could it be <br \/>\nthat the night is dumbstruck, dazed <br \/>\nwithin me, speechless?
