  {"id":283216,"date":"2011-04-08T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-04-08T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2011\/04\/08\/let-us-now-praise-texas-techs-the-americas-series\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T16:28:12","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T16:28:12","slug":"let-us-now-praise-texas-techs-the-americas-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2011\/04\/08\/let-us-now-praise-texas-techs-the-americas-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Let Us Now Praise Texas Tech&#39;s &#34;The Americas&#34; Series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now that the 8th book in the <a href=\"http:\/\/ttupress.org\/_catalog_105878\/The_Americasl\">Americas Series from Texas Tech<\/a> has arrived, it seems like an opportune time to bring some attention to Irene Vilar&#8217;s exciting project.<\/p>\n<p>Irene used to run this series out of the University of Wisconsin Press back in the early 2000s, but after leaving and writing a memoir (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.otherpress.com\/books\/book?ean=9781590513200\"><em>Impossible Motherhood<\/em>,<\/a> available from Other Press), she relaunched The Americas at Texas Tech with the publication of David Toscana&#8217;s <em>The Last Reader<\/em>, transated by Asa Zatz.<\/p>\n<p>(Quick &#8220;let&#8217;s make fun of people who don&#8217;t understand the Internets&#8221; moment: I wanted to see which books ended up in the Wisconsin version of this series&#8212;I believe the Jorge Amado books were in this, but I can&#8217;t remember the others&#8212;so I visited <a href=\"http:\/\/uwpress.wisc.edu\/series.html#anchor1822235\">this<\/a> <span class=\"caps\">UWP<\/span> page. Click on the link for &#8220;a list of the books in this series.&#8221; I dare you.)<\/p>\n<p><em>The Last Reader<\/em> sounds fantastic (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?id=2089\">this earlier post<\/a>), as do all of the other titles. Here&#8217;s a quick rundown of the ones I&#8217;m most interested in:<\/p>\n<p><center><txp_image id=\"692\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p><em>The Origin of Species and Other Poems<\/em> by Ernesto Cardenal, translated from the Spanish by John Lyons. <\/p>\n<p>Cardenal is considered by many to be one of Latin America&#8217;s greatest contemporary poets, and his work has been getting a lot of love of late. <em>Pluriverse<\/em> came out from New Directions a couple years back (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?id=1868\">our review here<\/a>), and did a great job encapsulating Cardenal&#8217;s 56-year career. This new book will likely get a ton of attention (more on that as it happens), and because of the new publication, Cardenal will be going on an extensive U.S. tour. (Check our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?s=event\">translation events calendar<\/a> for more specifics.)<\/p>\n<p><center><txp_image id=\"693\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p><em>The War in Bom Fim<\/em> by Moacyr Scliar, translation from the Portuguese by David William Foster<\/p>\n<p>Scliar&#8212;who passed away in February&#8212;is one of Brazil&#8217;s most beloved writers. A few of his books came out in the classic Avon series of Latin American authors, and a few others popped up here and there from a variety of presses, but I feel like his work has been underappreciated here in the States, and instead, he&#8217;s most known for thinking of suing Yann Martel for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2002\/11\/06\/books\/tiger-in-a-lifeboat-panther-in-a-lifeboat-a-furor-over-a-novel.html?pagewanted=all\">ripping his ass off<\/a> for <em>Life of Pi.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The War in Bom Fim<\/em> sounds like a lot of fun (and will be the first of the series that I&#8217;m going to read and review):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>What if, as David William Foster poses in his introduction to Brazilian author Moacyr Scliar\u2019s novel, the Germans did choose to invade the Americas in the second World War? What if the Luftwaffe did plan to bomb American cities? [. . .]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>With playful irony, homage to the Jewish folktale, a touch of magical realism, and keen insight into the customs and characters of this Yiddish-speaking melting pot, Scliar spins a fable of an imaginary war waged by the youngsters of Bom Fim. Brothers Nathan and Joel and their gang defend their quarter against a pretend German military invasion, while their parents deal with the quarrels and worries of the adult world. But which is more real? In Scliar\u2019s richly layered fantasy Carnival and Pesach, Nazi and Jew, the consumer and the consumed, the grotesque and the quotidian intermingle unexpectedly amid the kitchens and alleys of Bom Fim.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><center><txp_image id=\"694\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p><em>The Fist Child<\/em> by Lucia Puenzo, translated from the Spanish by David William Foster<\/p>\n<p>Lucia Puenzo was included in <em>Granta<\/em>&#8216;s &#8220;Best of Young Spanish Novelists&#8221; special issue, and we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?id=2995\">wrote about her<\/a> as part of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/?s=tag&amp;t=young-spanish-novelists\">22 Days of Awesome<\/a> series. <\/p>\n<p>Puenzo is a writer and filmmaker (she received a lot of praise of <em><span class=\"caps\">XXY<\/span><\/em> as mentioned in our <em>Granta<\/em> post) and the movie adaptation of <em>The Fish Child<\/em> appeared at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival. Here&#8217;s the trailer:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"380\" height=\"232\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Vs9yGPf_C2E\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><txp_image id=\"695\" \/><txp_image id=\"696\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Symphony in White<\/em> by Adriana Lisboa, translated from the Portuguese by Sarah Green<\/p>\n<p><em>Hut of Fallen Persimmons<\/em> by Adriana Lisboa, translated from the Portuguese by Sarah Green<\/p>\n<p>Both Lisboa books sound really interesting, and we have a forthcoming review of <em>Symphony in White<\/em>, which won the Jose Saramago Prize in 2003. <em>Symphony in White<\/em> focuses on two sisters, a &#8220;swirl of dark secrets,&#8221; and the &#8220;unspoken atrocities of the military dictatorship holding sway in their country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Hut of Fallen Persimmons<\/em> just arrived the other week, and tells the story of Haruki and Celina&#8217;s trip to Japan. &#8220;Their trip to Kyoto provides a context for each to meditate on the past, their feelings for each other, and the questions of cultural difference. Through a counterpoint of narration and text, the pair&#8217;s losses and struggles gradually unfold.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>All with striking covers, these eight books make a fantastic collection. And I&#8217;m really looking forward to all the books Irene ends up including in the series.
