  {"id":270016,"date":"2009-04-07T13:31:57","date_gmt":"2009-04-07T13:31:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2009\/04\/07\/gbo-giveaway-hans-falladas-every-man-dies-alone\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T17:24:09","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:24:09","slug":"gbo-giveaway-hans-falladas-every-man-dies-alone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2009\/04\/07\/gbo-giveaway-hans-falladas-every-man-dies-alone\/","title":{"rendered":"GBO Giveaway: Hans Fallada&#39;s Every Man Dies Alone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the biggest books this spring&#8212;at least in terms of general coverage and growing hype&#8212;has to be Hans Fallada&#8217;s rediscovered masterpiece, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shamandrum.com\/bookshop\/index.php?main_page=pubs_product_book_info&#38;products_id=68317\"><em>Every Man Dies Alone.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s based on a true story of a working class couple living in Berlin during <span class=\"caps\">WWII<\/span> who launch a &#8220;simple, clandestine resistance campaign that soon has an enraged Gestapo on their trail, and a world of terrified neighbors and cynical snitches ready to turn them in.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>The novel&#8217;s been receiving heaps of praise, including a very positive review in the <em>New York Times Book Review<\/em> that opens: &#8220;A signal literary event of 2009 has occurred.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I should save this for my upcoming <span class=\"caps\">PRI<\/span> post, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theworld.org\/node\/25000\">The World<\/a> recently did a segment on <em>The Kindly Ones<\/em> and <em>Every Man Dies Alone<\/em> that included a brief conversation with Ulrich Ditzen, Fallada&#8217;s son. <\/p>\n<p>All of this build-up is just to let you know that the German Book Office in New York is giving away five free copies of the beautifully produced hardcover.
