As stated on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manasianliteraryprize.org\/2008\/background.php\">website,<\/a> the prize has three main goals: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To bring exciting new Asian authors to the attention of the world literary community; <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>To facilitate publishing and translation of Asian literature in and into English; and <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>To highlight Asia&#8217;s developing role in world literature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Last year (the inaugural year for the award), the winner was <i>Wolf Totem<\/i> by Jiang Rong, which was promptly translated into English and published to mixed reviews. <\/p>\n<p>Yesterday the long list for the 2008 award was announced:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Tulsi Badrinath, <i>Melting Love<\/i><br \/>\nHans Billimoria, <i>Ugly Tree<\/i><br \/>\nIan Rosales Casocot, <i>Sugar Land<\/i><br \/>\nHan Dong, <i>Banished!<\/i><br \/>\nAnjum Hasan, <i>Neti, Neti<\/i><br \/>\nDaisy Hasan, <i>The To-Let House<\/i><br \/>\nAbdullah Hussein, <i>The Afghan Girl<\/i><br \/>\nTsutomu Igarashi, <i>To the Temple<\/i><br \/>\nRupa Krishnan, <i>Something Wicked This Way Comes<\/i><br \/>\nMurong Xuecun, <i>Leave Me Alone, Chengdu<\/i><br \/>\nKavery Nambisan, <i>The Story that Must Not be Told<\/i><br \/>\nSumana Roy, <i>Love in the Chicken&#8217;s Neck<\/i><br \/>\nVaibhav Saini, <i>On the Edge of Pandemonium<\/i><br \/>\nSalma, <i>Midnight Tales<\/i><br \/>\nSiddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi, <i>Lost Flamingoes of Bombay<\/i><br \/>\nLakambini A. Sitoy, <i>Sweet Haven<\/i><br \/>\nSarayu Srivatsa, <i>The Last Pretence<\/i><br \/>\nMiguel Syjuco, <i>Ilustrado<\/i><br \/>\nAmit Varma, <i>My Friend, Sancho<\/i><br \/>\nYu Hua, <i>Brothers<\/i><br \/>\nAlfred A. Yuson, <i>The Music Child<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Man Asian Literary Prize website does have short bios for each of these authors (and sometimes contact info), although I think they would have a better chance of accomplishing their goals if they had excerpts online. Or printed a &#8220;Man Asian Prize Sampler&#8221; with 10-15 page excerpts from each of the longlist finalists. That sort of publication would go a long way with publishers, and I&#8217;m sure there are a number of Chinese translators out there that would be interested in working on something like this . . . <\/p>\n<p>In terms of the Prize, the five finalists will be announced around November 1st, with the winner being announced at the end of November. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Man Asian Literary Prize is an annual award for the best Asian novel unpublished in English.
