  {"id":262916,"date":"2008-06-25T14:00:06","date_gmt":"2008-06-25T14:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2008\/06\/25\/independent-bookselling-struggles-and-bad-news\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T17:32:06","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:32:06","slug":"independent-bookselling-struggles-and-bad-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2008\/06\/25\/independent-bookselling-struggles-and-bad-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Independent Bookselling: Struggles and Bad News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As discussed in detail on <a href=\"http:\/\/edwardn.blogspot.com\/2008\/06\/tv-documentary-chronicles-indies.html\">Ed Nawotka&#8217;s blog,<\/a> <i>Paperback Dreams<\/i> is a documentary coming out this fall that focuses on the struggles of two West Coast independent bookstores: Kepler&#8217;s and Cody&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The film, which will run on <span class=\"caps\">PBS<\/span> stations starting in November, begins with the opening of Kepler&#8217;s near Stanford University in 1955, documents Andy Ross&#8217;s purchase of Cody&#8217;s in 1977 and follows the impact of the Internet age of the late 1990s. It ends with the closing of Cody&#8217;s San Francisco location and a depiction of Kepler&#8217;s ongoing struggles to remain open.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In producing this, filmmaker Alex Beckstead came up with four survival principles for bookstores:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>1. Own your own building.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>2. Hire experienced staff.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>3. Sell used books. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>4. Figure out some way to sell books online. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I wonder if other booksellers would agree with these . . . The first sounds like a no-brainer, and is one of the causes for so many New York bookstores going under over the past few years. (Such as Lenox Hill, Coliseum, Gotham, etc., etc.)<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s sort of sadly ironic to post this today though, after reading this item in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/article\/CA6572224.html?nid=2286&#38;source=title&#38;rid=383006433\"><i>Publishers Weekly<\/i>:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Cody\u2019s Books, the one-time iconic Berkeley, Calif. bookstore that has fallen on hard times in recent years, has closed.
