  {"id":261756,"date":"2008-04-24T23:11:01","date_gmt":"2008-04-24T23:11:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2008\/04\/24\/susan-sontag-prize-for-translation\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T17:32:15","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:32:15","slug":"susan-sontag-prize-for-translation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2008\/04\/24\/susan-sontag-prize-for-translation\/","title":{"rendered":"Susan Sontag Prize for Translation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We posted about the Susan Sontag Prize for Translation when the call for submissions went out, and it was just announced that Kristin Dickinson (who did her undergrad work at the URochester), Robin Ellis, and Priscilla Layne won for their collaborative translation of <i>Koppstoff: Kanaka Sprak vom Rande der Gesellschaft<\/i> by Feridun Zaimoglu.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Feridun Zaimoglu&#8217;s <i>Koppstoff: Kanaka Sprak vom Rande der Gesellschaft<\/i> (1998) presents the fictionalized voices of 26 women of Turkish heritage living in Germany. \u201cKoppstoff,\u201d which when translated literally means \u201chead material,\u201d refers not only to the headscarf worn on the heads of many Muslim women, but also to what is going on in their heads \u2013 their thoughts, perspectives and inner lives. Zaimoglu resists any neat categorization of Muslim women by presenting a diverse range of voices: from cleaning women to professionals, from political activists to prostitutes.
