G. Sebald&#8217;s <i>The Emigrants<\/i> harken back to what is probably the earliest work of fiction ever to embed photographs, Georges Rodenbach\u2019s <i>Bruges-la-Morte.<\/i> Somehow I feel that Sebald knew this seminal work, which was first published in book form in 1892 (after appearing serially in Paris&#8217; <i>Le Figaro<\/i>). Rodenbach&#8217;s Symbolist novel is the story of love and murder in the \u201cdead\u201d city of Bruges. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The book sounds fascinating, and is available from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlaspress.co.uk\/index.cgi?action=view_backlist&#38;number=12\">Atlas Books.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scott Esposito brought this interesting post about Georges Rodenbach\u2019s Bruges-la-Morte to our attention.
