Whenever I hear or read discussions of the difficulties of reviewing translations, I always think of other kinds of reviews of collaborative works of art. Film and theater and music critics don’t seem to agonize over how to review each aspect of a work according to who is responsible for it. They talk about the strengths and weaknesses of a film or a piece of music or a play as a whole, give credit or criticism where it’s due if they can tell where it’s due, and don’t sweat who’s to blame (or praise) if they can’t. What bugs me as a translator is when a critic attributes a flaw or virtue in a work of literature to either the author or the translator and gets it wrong.
